Class: Aves Family: Phalacrocoracidae Species: Phalacrocorax carbo Common Name: Great Cormorant Description: Unlike the Socotra Cormorant, the Great Cormoront does not breed in Bahrain. They can also be distinguished from the Socotra by their larger size and lighter coloured bills. Cormoronts catch fish underwater but do not produce natural oils to keep their feathers dry. Phalacrocorax nigrogularis

Class: Aves Family: Phalacrocoracidae Species: Phalacrocorax nigrogularis Common Name: Socotra Cormorant Description: Resident Breeder. Endemic to the Arabian Gulf and Souther Arabia including the Socotra Islands south of Yemen after which they are named. The Hawar breeding colony is the largest in the world. Adults are completely black from head to toe. They rarely fly over land; long dark thin lines of Socotra can be seen flying over the sea. Rated as 'threatened' by the IUCN because of the vulnerability of the small number of breeding colonies and the high level of human disturbance in the Gulf.
